The Mazda Motor Corporation first got its start in 1920 selling three-wheeled motorcycles called “Autorickshaws” in Hiroshima, Japan. The popularity of these vehicles and the Mazda name increased significantly after Mazda began sponsoring events in the 1930s.
1940 brought the invention of the first passenger vehicle, and the demand for more affordable cars increased as a result. This prompted Mazda to begin developing designs for compact cars, trucks, and three-wheeled vehicles, which eventually led to the development of the iconic Mazda rotary engine.
When did Ford buy Mazda? Ford Motor Company bought stakes in the Mazda Motor Corporation in 1979. By 1995, Ford owned over 33% of the company, but ended up selling all of its Mazda shares in 2015.
