FAQ - ANSWERS TO ALL THINGS ELECTRIC

Charging

The Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t ever run purely on the gas engine. While the gas engine will, at times, serve as the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid’s primary power source, it also acts as a generator to ensure the EV battery remains at a minimum state of charge to provide a seamless hybrid drive experience.

Thanks to its versatile charging port, charging a Mazda CX-90 PHEV is easy. Using the portable Level 1 charging cable that comes with your CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid, simply plug your vehicle into a regular wall socket to draw electricity directly from the grid. If you are looking to get the job done faster, you can install a universal Level 2 home charger to deliver a faster supply of power.

For the optimal driving experience, charge every night. Plug-in and gradually top up the battery when not in use. For long drives or those weekends away when your battery runs low, your gas engine is there to provide backup power for your Plug-In Hybrid, taking you further until you are able to recharge again.

The J1772 port on the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is configured to work with Level 1 and Level 2 charging cables.

Yes, the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid comes standard with a portable Level 1 charging cable to plug into common 120-volt outlets.

Yes. Customers are not exposed to risk of electric shock when charging in the rain. However, we recommend you do not charge the high voltage battery outside if there is heavy rain, strong winds or lightning.

Remove water with a clean cloth if the charge connector or charge plug is wet. Avoid touching the charge port or charge cable with wet hands.

The charging port is designed so that it isn’t a problem if small amounts of water or dust get in the port when charging the car. Additionally, there is a cap that covers the charging port and a partitioning seal that helps keep the port dry and clean.

You can visit Chargepoint to find public charging stations near you. Owners can also use the MyMazda App to search for and navigate to public charging stations near their home, workplace or other destinations. In addition, owners can also use the ChargePoint app to explore charging stations, view user-generated reviews, check current pricing and pay for their charging sessions.

The CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is compatible with Level 2 charging solutions found at many public charging stations, but not Level 3 (DC Fast) solutions.  Plug-In Hybrid cannot charge at Tesla Supercharging stations and is not compatible with the CHAdeMO DC Connector.

Range

Yes. Like fuel efficiency with gas engines, your speed and the use of electrical features within the car that rely on battery power, such as air conditioning or heated seats, may also affect the vehicle’s range. Reducing the energy consumption of the vehicle will increase the range.

To maximize driving range, consider these steps:

  • Pre-heating or pre-cooling your vehicle’s cabin via the MyMazda App while charging.1
  • Parking in a garage to minimize the effects from extreme weather.
  • Drive efficiently by avoiding heavy acceleration and high speeds, which can drain the battery faster.
  • Check your tire pressure often; underinflated tires can negatively impact range.

1 Connected services are subject to change at any time without notice. Mazda Connected Services is provided during a 1-year trial period; annual subscription fees apply thereafter. Use of MyMazda App and compatible phone are required. Connected services require cellular or Wi-Fi service. Data fees may apply. Never drive while distracted or while using a hand-held device. Please see your Owner’s Manual for important feature details and related privacy information.

Lithium-ion batteries prefer an ideal temperature of 77-95° F (25-35° C). If the battery is too cold, range, charging times and performance can decline. Range is less affected by hot weather, but the battery can degrade more quickly and charge more slowly.

Since the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is a gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle, the gasoline engine is there to back up the electric motor when battery charge becomes low. You can fill your Plug-In Hybrid up with gas at any available gas station.

Battery

The CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid switches over to the gas engine for power when battery charge drops below a certain level.  While driving, CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid can also employ “Charge Mode” that will use the engine to charge the battery up to a preset level of charge.

When the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is operated in electric-only mode, there are no emissions from the vehicle tailpipe. During longer driving distances, when the engine turns on, the Plug-In Hybrid performs similar to a traditional hybrid vehicle, consuming less fuel and producing fewer emissions than similar conventional vehicles.

While the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid can operate on 100% electric power, you cannot operate the vehicle without gasoline in the tank.

CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid is equipped with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Yes, the CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid lithium-ion batteries come with a High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty and a High Voltage Battery Capacity Limited Warranty. Both warranties are for 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. In TZEV states, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply. See your Mazda Dealer for Limited Warranty details.

The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period is 96 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

For vehicles registered in California and other states that have adopted California’s emissions regulations under Section 177 of the Federal Clean Air Act, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply.  This extended emission warranty coverage is for vehicles certified as a Transitional Zero Emissions Vehicle (TZEV) as indicated on the vehicle emission control information label. In TZEV states, extended emission warranty coverage of the High Voltage Battery may apply.

The High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty period begins on the Date of First Service. “Date of First Service” means the first date the Mazda Vehicle is delivered to the first retail purchaser, is leased or is placed into service as a company vehicle use (e.g., as a demonstrator, rental or fleet vehicle), whichever is earliest. This Limited Warranty does not mean that the High Voltage Battery is defect free. For this reason, Mazda provides this  Limited Warranty in order to remedy during the warranty period any such defects in materials and workmanship subject to the exclusions indicated under “WHAT IS NOT COVERED”. The vehicle must be brought to an Authorized Mazda Dealer for all warranty service. The Authorized Mazda Dealer will without charge for parts or labor, either repair or replace the defective High Voltage Battery using a new, remanufactured or factory  reconditioned High Voltage Battery with a suitable energy capacity level at the time of warranty repair. See your Mazda Dealer for High Voltage Battery Limited Warranty details.

Our family-owned dealership in Larksville, Pennsylvania proudly serves environmentally conscious families throughout Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Dallas, and Kingston who want a three-row SUV that reduces fuel consumption and emissions for daily driving without sacrificing the space, capability, or luxury refinement that family life requires.

e-SKYACTIV Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain and 26-Mile Electric Range

The 2026 CX-90 PHEV combines a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with a 68-kilowatt electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack to deliver a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel, enabling 0-60 mph acceleration that's actually quicker than the gasoline-only CX-90. The plug-in hybrid system provides up to 26 miles of all-electric driving for daily commuting and local errands, meaning many Northeast Pennsylvania drivers can handle typical weekday routines entirely on electricity when the battery is kept charged. When the battery is depleted or more power is needed, the system seamlessly transitions to hybrid operation using the gasoline engine, delivering a total driving range of approximately 490 miles on a full charge and full tank. Multiple drive modes including EV, Normal, Sport, and Tow let you optimize the powertrain for different conditions, while the rear-biased i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system works in concert with the hybrid powertrain to deliver the nimble, engaging driving dynamics that distinguish every Mazda vehicle. Properly equipped CX-90 PHEV models can tow up to 3,500 pounds for utility trailers, small boats, and recreational gear. For drivers who prefer the higher-output inline-six powertrain without plug-in hybrid technology, the Mazda CX-90 Turbo models offer an alternative with up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity.

Spacious Three-Row Seating and Flexible Family Configuration

The CX-90 PHEV is meticulously designed to accommodate up to seven or eight passengers across three rows, with flexible seating configurations that let you choose between a traditional second-row bench seat or available dual captain's chairs that enhance comfort and second-row access. Both configurations provide easy entry to the third row, which offers practical seating for additional passengers or can be folded flat to expand cargo capacity for family adventures, home-improvement projects, and weekend getaways. Up to 15.9 cubic feet of cargo space sits behind the third row even with all seats occupied, expanding significantly when the second and third rows fold down. Premium interior features available on upper trims include Nappa leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a hands-free power liftgate that makes loading family gear effortless. An available panoramic moonroof brings natural light into the cabin and enhances the open, connected feel of long road trips.

Convenient Home Charging and Sophisticated Technology

The 2026 CX-90 PHEV charges on common household outlets using the included Level 1 portable charger for overnight replenishment, or on Level 2 equipment where the battery can reach approximately 80 percent charge in about 1.5 hours. The vehicle's J1772 charging port is compatible with the vast majority of public Level 2 charging stations, giving you flexibility when away from home. Inside, the 2026 CX-90 PHEV features Mazda's advanced technology suite including a 12.3-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Alexa Built-in voice control, and PHEV-specific screens that show real-time energy flow, battery state of charge, and efficiency metrics to help drivers maximize their electric driving range. Mazda Driver Personalization uses an interior camera to recognize individual drivers and automatically restore preferred seat, mirror, and steering wheel settings for each family member who drives the vehicle. Available premium features include a Bose audio system, wireless device charging, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster on higher trims.

Comprehensive Safety and Thoughtfully Equipped Trims

The 2026 CX-90 PHEV earned the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation and a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from NHTSA, backed by a comprehensive i-ACTIVSENSE safety suite that comes standard across the entire lineup. Standard safety features include Cruising & Traffic Support with lane-centering assistance, Emergency Lane Keeping with Blind Spot Assist, Smart Brake Support with front crossing detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Speed Limit Assist - all working together to reduce driver workload and enhance confidence during long family trips. Upper trims add a 360-degree View Monitor with See-Through View and Trailer Hitch View that simplifies parking and hitch alignment. The 2026 lineup includes the PHEV Preferred, PHEV Premium Sport, and PHEV Premium Plus trims, each building on the previous with meaningful upgrades to materials, technology, and convenience features.
